Oh he really hit the nail on the head this one. I had tears in my eyes listening to him cry while he spoke about how hard it is for LGBT people of color. And when he says that he feels good when Asian LGBT people send him messages, I felt that so deeply. Like you can tell the difference between Jonathan’s whiteness and Tan’s non-whiteness here because Jonathan, like any white person, was raised in an individualist culture, so he clearly sees this influx of publicity and love mail as overwhelming and emotionally taxing. And to be fair, it absolutely can be, especially for a gay man newly in the public eye (when the media and the public are still so often homophobic). But Tan sees this as something so amazing and pure to be celebrated, because he’s a Pakistani Muslim man and he, like any other person of color, was raised in a collectivist culture and values community and family bonds and forming those relationships with other people, and particularly, being able to provide that representation for young LGBT people of color who feel so alone and adrift.
I still have tears in my eyes just remembering the sound of Tan crying while he talked about how difficult it was and the envy he felt for white gay people, growing up. This is such a difficult truth to verbalize because white gay people immediately become defensive, and yet it’s so true. I love Tan so much and I’m so fucking thankful for him.
